Kosher & Chabad in 5 Cheap Winter Destinations: Where to Eat, Pray and Stay (2026)

Updated September 2026 · 7 min read

Winter is the cheap season for most short-haul destinations — but if you keep kosher, "cheap" is also measured by how far the hotel is from the Chabad House, and whether the city has a kosher restaurant at all. Here are five destinations where both add up: reasonable flights and hotels between November and February, plus an active Chabad community with kosher food within walking distance. For each one: where Chabad is, what there is to eat, and which neighbourhood to sleep in so that Shabbat works.

Before you start: three rules that save disappointment

1. Bangkok — the largest Chabad House in the East

Chabad of Bangkok is at 96 Ram Buttri Road, the street just behind Khao San, the heart of backpacker Bangkok. The building ("Ohr Menachem") is one of the largest Chabad centres anywhere: a synagogue, an event hall and a kosher meat restaurant inside the building itself, with delivery. The city also has a kosher grocery and bakery — in Bangkok you don't "manage", you simply eat.

Why winter: November–February is the pleasant, dry season in Thailand, so it isn't the cheapest for flights — but daily costs in the city are very low, and on a long trip that is what decides the budget. Where to stay: Banglamphu / Phra Nakhon, within walking distance of Ram Buttri. If Khao San itself is too loud, the side streets nearby are surprisingly calm.

2. Tbilisi — a kosher restaurant opposite the Great Synagogue

Tbilisi in winter is a city of wood stoves and mulled wine: cold, but without the summer crowds, and cheap. Chabad of Tbilisi runs Mendi's — a mehadrin meat restaurant at 7 Bambis Rigi, directly opposite the Great Synagogue in the Old Town — plus a dairy kitchen inside the Chabad House (breakfast, pizza, and kosher khachapuri). Shabbat meals by advance registration through the Chabad website.

Why winter: low season for hotels in the Old Town, and the sulphur baths of Abanotubani are a few minutes' walk from the synagogue. Where to stay: the Old Town (Kala / Abanotubani) — everything on foot, including on Shabbat.

3. Prague — the "Jewish Street" with three restaurants metres apart

In Prague's Jewish Quarter (Josefov) one street holds almost everything: U Milosrdných. Chabad of Prague runs The Chabad Grill there (meat, Middle-Eastern, U Milosrdných 6) and U Milo (dairy, Italian-style, U Milosrdných 4), with the Shelanu pizzeria nearby (Břehová 8). A kosher mini-market and an active synagogue are on the same street — possibly the densest kosher cluster in Central Europe.

Why winter: December is expensive (Christmas markets), but January–February are the cheapest months of the year for both flights and hotels — and the Old Town under snow is an experience in itself. Where to stay: Josefov or the Old Town (Staré Město) — ten minutes on foot from every restaurant and synagogue.

4. Budapest — Europe's biggest Jewish quarter, two restaurants on one street

In Budapest's 7th district, on Kazinczy Street, sit the city's two main kosher restaurants: Carmel (no. 31, mehadrin under Rabbi Oberlander, the Chabad shliach to Hungary) and Hanna (no. 29, next to the Kazinczy Synagogue, also serving Shabbat meals). Around them: historic synagogues, a kosher bakery and shops. Chabad of Budapest keeps an up-to-date list of every kosher establishment in the city on its website.

Why winter: Budapest is among the cheapest European capitals year-round, and even more so in January–February. The thermal baths (Széchenyi, Gellért) are exactly what you want at minus two. Where to stay: the 7th district (Erzsébetváros) — all the kosher options minutes away, along with most of the cafés and nightlife.

5. Lisbon — a warm winter, but kosher takes planning

Lisbon is the "warm" one on the list: around 15°C in January, and winter prices well below summer. It is also the destination that needs the most planning: Chabad Portugal is in Cascais (R. Aristides de Sousa Mendes 105), a seaside town about 30 km west of the city, not in central Lisbon. Shabbat meals are held there by advance registration, and kosher takeaway can be ordered from the Chabad House (at least 24 hours ahead). In central Lisbon itself: the Portuel kosher supermarket (Rua Gomes Freire 146A, near Picoas metro) and the kosher restaurant Genesis — check opening hours before you go.

Two ways to do it right: (a) stay in Cascais — a lovely town in its own right, with a direct 40-minute train to central Lisbon on weekdays; (b) stay in Lisbon, shop at the kosher supermarket and eat at the restaurant during the week, and order Shabbat food in advance. Why winter: pleasant weather, Lisbon without queues, and flights and hotels at their yearly low.

What about Dubai?

Dubai was meant to be on this list — it has an active Chabad House and kosher restaurants under the supervision of Rabbi Duchman. We left it out deliberately: as of September 2026, Israel's National Security Council publishes a travel warning for the UAE that includes a recommendation to avoid Jewish and Israeli institutions and visible signs of identity in public. A "where is Chabad" article for such a destination would contradict official guidance. If you are considering it anyway, check the current status on gov.il before booking, not after.
