Every traveler asks the same 7 questions before Thailand — but the answer changes depending on where you fly from. Your passport, the law that protects you, your currency and your airport are all different. This guide detects your location and shows the answer that's right for you. The basics are shared; the details are personalized.

📍 Detecting where you're flying from… If it's off, every answer below is still accurate — it just defaults to a US traveler.

1. Do I need a visa? Is my passport OK?

🛂 Tailored to you
Most passports (including the US) get 60 days visa-free in Thailand. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months.

Since 2025 Thailand requires the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) — a free online form you fill before landing. Beware of copycat sites charging money for a free form.

2. When is it cheapest to fly — and from where?

✈️ Your departure airport
Flights from major US hubs (LAX/JFK/SFO) to Bangkok, usually with one stop.

The cool, dry, pleasant season is November–February (also peak prices). Cheapest is May–October (rainy season — short daily downpours, but far lower fares). A day or two of date flexibility saves a lot. Check the live price to Bangkok instead of guessing.

3. How much will it cost — in my currency?

💰 In your money
Thailand is cheap: budget travel ~$35–55/day, comfortable ~$90–140/day (stay + food + transport, excl. flight).

Bangkok spans everything from a $10 hostel to a lavish boutique hotel. Legendary street food costs pennies and transport (BTS/boats) is cheap. Most of your spend is the flight — which is exactly where comparing pays off.

4. If my flight is delayed or cancelled — what am I owed?

⚖️ The law that covers you
Under US DOT rules there is no guaranteed cash compensation for delays — but if the airline cancels you're owed rebooking or a full refund.

This is one of the most under-claimed rights. A service like AirHelp checks for free whether you're owed money and only takes a fee if you win.

5. Will my phone work there? (eSIM)

📶 Staying connected in Thailand
Buy a Thailand eSIM in advance and activate it the moment you land — no roaming shock, no hunting for a SIM shop.

A Thailand eSIM costs a few dollars a week and gives fast data for maps, navigation and Grab (Asia's ride app). Sort it before you leave — land connected.

6. Do I need travel insurance?

🛡️ Your coverage
Yes. Your home health insurance usually won't cover you in Thailand — and private treatment or evacuation there costs a fortune. Travel insurance is essential, not a luxury.

Thailand means scooters, street food and water activities — exactly where insurance matters most. Make sure you have medical, evacuation, and scooter/adventure cover if relevant.

7. What are the must-sees and must-dos?

The Grand Palace and Wat Arun, a floating market, a street-food tour, an evening cruise on the Chao Phraya river, and a day trip to ancient Ayutthaya. Book tickets ahead — it saves queues and money. Klook is especially strong across Asia and covers most experiences in Thailand.

Bonus: power plug

🔌 The adapter you need
Thailand runs on 220V with sockets type A/B/C. US plugs (A/B) fit — just check your device supports 220V.

More on Bangkok & Thailand

Bangkok is the gateway to Thailand and all of Southeast Asia. Don't miss the Grand Palace, Wat Pho with its reclining Buddha, Wat Arun on the Chao Phraya river, the floating market at Damnoen Saduak, the giant weekend Chatuchak market, backpacker hub Khao San Road, and Sukhumvit for shopping and nightlife. Popular day trips run to historic Ayutthaya or the Maeklong railway market.

You'll arrive via Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK); the easiest options are a pre-booked airport transfer or the Airport Rail Link. Get around on the BTS Skytrain, MRT, river boats and tuk-tuks. Don't forget your visa/TDAC, a Thailand eSIM, travel insurance, and check the rainy season vs the dry season before locking dates. Bangkok street food — pad thai, mango sticky rice, tom yum — is among the cheapest and tastiest on earth.
