Every traveler asks the same 7 questions before Japan — but the answer changes depending on where you fly from. Your passport, the law that protects you, your currency and your airport are all different. This guide detects your location and shows the answer that's right for you.

📍 Detecting where you're flying from… If it's off, every answer below is still accurate — it just defaults to a US traveler.

💡 Compare and book directly with the supplier:

1. Do I need a visa? Is my passport OK?

🛂 Tailored to you
Most passports (incl. US/UK/EU/AU/CA) get up to 90 days visa-free in Japan. Just a valid passport.

Japan requires no advance visa for most passports — just a passport valid for your stay. Have your first night's address and an onward ticket handy.

2. When is it cheapest to fly — and from where?

✈️ Your departure airport
Flights from US West Coast hubs (LAX/SFO/SEA) to Tokyo, often direct.

Peak (and priciest) is cherry blossom (late March–April) and autumn leaves (November). Best value: May–June and September. Check the live price to Tokyo instead of guessing.

3. How much will it cost — in my currency?

💰 In your money
Budget travel ~$60–90/day, comfortable ~$150–225/day (excl. flight).

Japan uses the Japanese yen (JPY). The weak yen makes Japan better value than in years — cash is still widely used. Most of your spend is flight and stay — which is exactly where comparing pays off.

4. If my flight is delayed or cancelled — what am I owed?

⚖️ The law that covers you
No EU261 departing Tokyo. US DOT has no fixed cash rule for delays, but you're owed rebooking or a full refund if the airline cancels.

A service like AirHelp checks for free whether you're owed money (e.g. on a European connecting leg) and only takes a fee if you win.

5. Will my phone work there? (eSIM)

📶 Staying connected in Japan
Grab a Japan eSIM before you fly and activate on landing — no roaming shock.

A Japan eSIM costs a few dollars a week and gives fast data for maps, navigation and ride apps. Sort it before you leave — land connected.

6. Do I need travel insurance?

🛡️ Your coverage
US health insurance won't cover you in Japan. Travel insurance is essential.

Japan is very safe, but medical care is expensive for tourists. Make sure you have medical and evacuation cover; add ski/mountain cover if relevant.

7. What are the must-sees and must-dos?

Shibuya and the Scramble Crossing, Senso-ji temple in Asakusa, Shinjuku, Akihabara, Tokyo Skytree, and a day trip to Mt. Fuji, Hakone or Nikko. Book tickets for the popular sites ahead. Klook is especially strong across Asia — JR Pass, Disney, Mt. Fuji day trips and restaurant bookings.

Bonus: power plug

🔌 The adapter you need
Japan is 100V, sockets A/B — US plugs fit; most chargers handle it, but check devices rated 120V-only.
