Hanukkah 2026 Family Trip: Where to Go, What to Book Now and What Can Wait
Updated October 2026 · 7 min read
Hanukkah 2026 starts in about five weeks, and every family with school-age kids is aiming at the same seven days. This is not a "10 most beautiful places" list — it is a decision timeline: the real dates, what December flight prices actually say (we measured them today from our own price scans), where the cheap ski resorts are open during Hanukkah and where they are not, and what you must lock this week versus what can safely wait until the last few days.
First, the dates — what is really free
- Hanukkah 5787: the first candle is lit on Friday evening, 4 December 2026; day one is Saturday 5 December, and the eighth day ends at nightfall on Saturday 12 December. The holiday is bracketed by two Shabbatot.
- Israeli school break: according to the published 5787 school calendar, pupils are off from Sunday 6 December and return on Sunday 13 December. Schools in other countries do not break for Hanukkah at all — which is exactly why the week is cheaper than Christmas week for everyone except Israeli families.
- What it means for flights: the typical Israeli family flies out on Saturday night 5 December or Sunday 6 December and returns on Saturday night 12 December or Sunday 13 December. Leaving on Thursday 3 December or returning on Monday 14 December opens up flights most parents never look at.
- What it is not: Christmas and New Year (24 December – 1 January) are Europe's peak, but they come after Hanukkah. Travelling in Hanukkah week means the Christmas markets are already open, without the end-of-month peak prices.
What the numbers say: December prices, measured today
This table is the reason we wrote the article. Our server scans round-trip fares for every month; these are the December 2026 and January 2027 figures as of 28 October 2026, from up to 100 scanned offers per destination, departing Tel Aviv. Wherever you fly from, the pattern is the useful part: it shows which destinations carry a December demand premium. "Cheapest" is the lowest fare found anywhere in the month — not necessarily in Hanukkah week; "December median" is closer to what a family will actually see. All fares are base fares per passenger, usually without checked baggage, converted to Israeli shekels; the final price is the one shown by the supplier at booking.
| Destination | Cheapest in December | December median | January median | "December premium" |
| Larnaca | ₪201 | ₪266 | ₪346 | December cheaper than January |
| Tbilisi | ₪555 | ₪604 | ₪686 | December cheaper than January |
| Sofia | ₪505 | ₪669 | ₪648 | +3% |
| London | ₪618 | ₪751 | ₪727 | +3% |
| Rome | ₪342 | ₪390 | ₪373 | +5% |
| Milan | ₪332 | ₪442 | ₪417 | +6% |
| Berlin | ₪608 | ₪851 | ₪776 | +10% |
| Athens | ₪331 | ₪495 | ₪417 | +19% |
| Vienna | ₪602 | ₪1,172 | ₪962 | +22% |
| Prague | ₪501 | ₪886 | ₪726 | +22% |
| Madrid | ₪595 | ₪803 | ₪652 | +23% |
| Amsterdam | ₪799 | ₪1,218 | ₪940 | +30% |
| Dubai | ₪1,056 | ₪1,387 | ₪1,011 | +37% |
| Budapest | ₪398 | ₪568 | ₪413 | +38% |
| Paris | ₪608 | ₪945 | ₪685 | +38% |
Source: FunSearchDeals price scans (Travelpayouts data), December 2026 vs January 2027, origin Tel Aviv, round trip, measured 28 October 2026. "December premium" = December median vs January median. Prices change hourly — the live deals at the bottom of this page show the market as you read.
What you are looking at: the December premium is far from uniform. Christmas-market cities — Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Paris, Amsterdam — cost 22%–38% more than in January, because half of Europe flies there in the same month. Rome, Milan, Sofia, London and Larnaca barely move, and Tbilisi and Larnaca are actually cheaper in December. If budget decides, that is your shortlist. And if Vienna in Hanukkah is the dream, the table says one thing: do not leave that flight to the last minute.
Four Hanukkah trips, by what is on our board
⛷️ Ski in Hanukkah — the check most families skip
This is the most expensive mistake on the list, so it comes first. Hanukkah 2026 ends on 12 December — and the cheap ski resorts of the Balkans and the Caucasus open around that date or later.
- Bansko (Bulgaria): the official opening in the last five seasons fell between 13 and 18 December. According to the lift operator, the 2026/27 season is defined as 1 December 2026 to 11 April 2027 subject to snow, and the opening day has not been announced; the ski calendars estimate 12 December — an estimate, not an official date. In Hanukkah week the gondola is closed or opens on the very last day. A ski week in Bansko during Hanukkah is a plan on paper.
- Gudauri (Georgia): the lifts opened on 21 and 27 December in the last two seasons — two weeks after Hanukkah. On top of that, Georgia requires mandatory entry insurance from 2026 (cover of at least 30,000 lari for the whole stay) — a detail that surprises families at the airport.
- So what works? If skiing is the goal — a January or February week, when the resorts are fully open and the flight to Sofia (January median ₪648) or Tbilisi (₪686) costs no more than in December. During Hanukkah itself, Bulgaria and Georgia are still great as winter city breaks — Sofia, Plovdiv, Tbilisi — just without the skis.
🎄 Christmas markets and light festivals — open exactly in Hanukkah week
- Vienna: the big market on Rathausplatz runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026; Schönbrunn Palace from 6 November to 6 January 2027; Karlsplatz until 23 December (Vienna tourist board). For kids: the ice rink on Rathausplatz is open until 6 January. The catch is price: Vienna has one of the highest December premiums in the table — a flight you book this week, not in December. Vienna on the board ←
- Prague and Budapest: the same markets, the same smell of waffles and mulled wine, and a December median ₪300–₪600 below Vienna. Prague has been falling in our recent scans; Budapest is cheap in January but jumps in December. The Prague compass ← · Kosher food and Chabad in Prague and Budapest ←
- Amsterdam: the Light Festival (light art along the canals) runs all winter until the end of January — but the December flight costs 30% more than January. If you are flexible — January.
☀️ Winter sun — Dubai and Cyprus
- Dubai: its peak season is exactly December to March, and the table shows it: the highest premium (+37%). What justifies it for families: no coats, and a full day built from our board — Burj Khalifa observation deck, desert safari, the La Perle water show, a street-food tour in old Dubai — plus a local eSIM from $4, because European roaming bundles do not cover the Emirates. What is different in Dubai (visa, plugs, rules) ← · Dubai deals ←
- Cyprus: the surprise of the table — Larnaca in December is cheaper than January (median ₪266), an hour's flight from Tel Aviv, and around 19 °C by day (long-term December average). Not a beach holiday, but parks, Limassol, the Troodos mountains with a little snow on the peaks — and you can be back on Sunday morning in time for school. Larnaca vs Paphos, car and budget ←
🏛️ A close, cheap city — Rome, Milan, Athens
All three sit at the bottom of the table: fares from ₪331–₪342 per passenger were found for December, with medians not far above (₪390–₪495). Italy in December is low season for tourists but peak season for Italians — short museum queues, Christmas markets in the piazzas, and pizza on every corner that kids eat without an argument. Athens is the shortest flight of the three, and about 14 °C at midday (long-term average). Italy on a budget ← · Athens on a budget ←
What to book now, and what can wait
| What | When | Why |
| The flight | This week | Every Israeli family is locked on the same 7 days, and only a handful of flights a day leave Tel Aviv for each destination. Especially Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Paris and Dubai — the premium is already in the table. |
| Travel insurance | Same day as the flight | Trip-cancellation cover starts the moment you buy — a policy bought the night before departure does not cover a child who fell ill the week before. Family policies often include the third child free. How to choose ← |
| Lodging | Now — with free cancellation | December demand is high even without Israelis. Lock a family room with free cancellation through our lodging map, and if the price drops — cancel and rebook. |
| Dated tickets | 2–3 weeks before | Christmas-market tours, shows, observation decks — they sell out for popular dates, but not five weeks ahead. Concerts (for example the Ed Sheeran tour dates on our board until 11 December) are the exception: book those early. |
| Car rental | 2–3 weeks before | In Bulgaria winter tyres are mandatory from 15 November to 1 March — make sure they are included. In Italy and Austria check tolls, vignettes and ZTL zones. Driving abroad: tolls and fines ← |
| Airport transfer | A week before | With kids and luggage in winter, a driver who is waiting is worth the difference — but there is no need to book it today. |
| eSIM | The day before | Install at home, activate on landing. In Georgia, the Emirates and the UK a European roaming bundle does not help — a local eSIM saves the most there. The guide ← |
Five Hanukkah mistakes parents make (all avoidable)
- A ski week in Bansko during Hanukkah. We said it already, but it repeats every year: the resort opens roughly when the holiday ends. If you have already booked — plan the week as a city break with a possible snow day, not the other way round.
- Forgetting that Hanukkah starts on Friday evening. Shabbat-observant families do not fly on the evening of 4 December or on 5 December — their window is Saturday night 5 December to Friday 11 December or Saturday night 12 December. That narrows the flights, so book those first.
- Buying insurance the night before. A policy bought after the flight does not cover a cancellation caused by an illness that started before the purchase. Buy it with the ticket.
- Relying on "roaming is included". True inside the EU. Not true in Georgia, the Emirates, and on some plans also in the UK and Switzerland. Check in advance — or just get an eSIM.
- Giving up compensation when the flight is delayed. Winter means delays, and on a flight back from Europe on any airline, EU261 pays for an arrival delay of 3 hours or more — €250 per passenger on a short flight, €400 on a medium one — per passenger, including a child with a seat. A family of four gets four times the amount. Flights to and from Israel fall under Israel's own aviation law, with its own amounts. The guide and eligibility check ←

One-minute checklist before you pay
- The dates match your school's break (6–13 December for most Israeli schools), and Shabbat if that matters to you.
- If the destination is a ski resort — you checked when it opens this season, not on average.
- The fare includes checked baggage for the kids (the base fares in the table usually do not).
- Passports valid for 6 months from the return date — the children's too.
- Insurance bought today, not the night before; for Georgia — entry insurance is mandatory.
- Booking confirmation and boarding passes saved — if the flight is delayed, that is the basis of your claim.
